Call for Applications

The Graduate School Building Solids for Function announces the opening of positions for PhD students at Vienna University of Technology in physics and chemistry. The Graduate School is committed to high quality in interdisciplinary research and training and is hence inviting applications of highly motivated students with excellent academic records.

The graduate school Solids4Fun guarantees full financial support on a 12-month basis for up to three years. Doctoral students admitted to the Solids4Fun doctoral program will have a regular employment at TU Vienna. The modalities of payment are geared to the rules laid out by TU Vienna and the Austrian Science Fund (FWF). The gross salary will be according to the FWF scheme (~EUR 2000,–, 14 times per year).

Additionally, the graduate program will provide some support for:

  • Travel expenses
  • Exchange programs with collaborating international universities
  • Soft skill training
  • Language courses (German and English)

Since the number of positions in the doctoral program Solids4Fun is limited, the faculty members of the doctoral program will assess all applications and select students with excellent academic records and visibly strong enthusiasm and talent for research. The call is open to nationals of all countries. In order to facilitate the assessment and to provide comprehensive information of their qualifications, students are requested to submit all documents mentioned in the Application Checklist below.

Application Checklist

Applying for Solids4Fun is a two-step process.

First step - application

In a first step each applicant has to fulfill the following points:

  • Online submission of the completed Application form
  • Upload of an abstract of the master thesis
  • Upload of a detailed curriculum vitae (CV) and a cover letter
  • Two letters of recommendation submitted by his/her recommenders via the Recommendation form (see below for details)

Letters of recommendation

Each applicant has to have TWO recommenders who both have to submit letters of recommendation. For this purpose each applicant must choose a unique ID while submitting the Application form. Both recommenders must refer to this ID while filling out the Recommendation form and upload a letter of recommendation.

Second step - selection

A pre-selection process by the faculty members will be based on the online applications. Only complete applications (i.e., including two recommendation letters) will be considered. Pre-selected candidates will be invited to Vienna for an interview. Persons who successfully pass both steps will be accepted to the Solids4Fun graduate school starting in October, 2016.

Dates and deadlines

The first selection round is going to end in March/April 2016 but the application form is still open and later applications will be kept for subsequent admission dates.
Applicants selected in the first round will be invited for interviews taking place in May, 2016. Later interview dates will be fixed at need. The Graduate School Solids4Fun starts in October, 2016.
